JOB PURPOSE：
Provide technical, logistical, and personnel leadership for the R&D, Chemical Development, Early Phase and ARD&QC staff to ensure the success of all contract projects. This includes the responsibility for the validity and timeliness of laboratory results, selection of appropriate instrumentation and methodologies, monitoring all aspects of the laboratory’s functions. Conduct technical and financial evaluations for potential new projects and performs evaluations on the status of current projects.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
Supervise and manage a group of professional scientists and chemists to meet the departmental goals for lab development and manufacturing operations projects. Carry out all supervisory responsibilities according to Johnson Matthey (JM) policies and applicable regulations.
Conduct technical and financial evaluations for potential new projects and performs evaluations on the status of current projects with input from other relevant parties.
Independently applies scientific knowledge (both theoretical and practical) for the resolution of chemical development problems. Uses outside resources (literature, specialty labs) to address and solve difficult problems.
Provides content, reviews, and writes proposals for chemical development client projects; scientific reports; regulatory documentation and other technical documents.
Responsible for scheduling assigned projects and resources within the group to meet the agreed upon project objectives and financial obligations.
Work closely with all functions to ensure efficient and timely project deliverables to customers. Develops the project scope and objectives based on the portfolio and corporate initiatives.
Recruit and ensure the competency of new staff members as needed to maintain or grow headcount as determined by business plans. This includes screening, interviewing, hiring, and training. Provide scheduled and unplanned feedback on staff performance and achievements, including annual reviews.
Provides leadership for employee relations through effective communication, coaching, training, and development, and ensures staff acts in accordance with Johnson Matthey policies and practices with respect to ISO, environmental, health, and safety (EH&S) and other related regulatory requirements.
Develop and ensure departmental efforts remain within expense and capital budgets and authorize spending as appropriate.
Provide leadership for problem resolution to facilitate technical improvements and build strong working relationships with R&D, QC, QA, ARD and production groups.
Prepares and manages the annual operating budget and capital budget for R&D, Chemical Development, Early Phase and ARD&QC functions.
Develops and implements operational plans and objectives, manages the R&D, Chemical Development, Early Phase and ARD&QC costs/assets consistent with established budgets.
Other duties as assigned.
